FIVE SUPER FOODS

Some decades ago the five super foods that prevailed were salmon, peanuts, soy broccoli and garlic. With the advancements in science and technology and years of evolving research, a new list of five super foods has evolved. The dieticians after a lot of research and study have derived a new list of super foods as of today. They are Dark green vegetables, Salmon, Pomegranate, Flax Seed and walnuts.
DARK GREENS
Dark green vegetables are great sources of vitamin A, vitamin C, phyto-nutrients and calcium. Some of these dark green vegetables are green beans, kale, collard greens, chard, bok choy, asparagus, broccoli, etc. These dark greens are low in calories, have a high content of fiber and helps to keeps your waistline slim and trim. They are also very wholesome and filling. The American Heart Association is now recommending having four servings of dark green vegetables a day for remaining healthy.
SALMON
Salmon is a good source of omega-3-fatty acids and protein and a good substitute for meat. The American Heart Association recommends two servings of fish in a week, namely Salmon. The health benefits of salmon are substantiated by some effective and solid scientific research and evidence that makes it a super food of today. It is better to have wild salmon than the farmed ones. Canned salmon is generally wild. Research has proved that consuming Salmon lowers your blood cholesterol as well.
POMEGRANATE
In the last two years this fruit has gained much importance in terms of health and has reached the super food level and status. This fruit contains a variety of beneficial antioxidants such as anthocyanins, tannins and polyphenols. As compared to other fruit juices, the pomegranate is seen to contain the highest level of antioxidants. Evolving research and evidence suggested that pomegranate juice may be helpful in reducing cholesterol. It was further concluded, based on scientific research and evidence that consumption of one glass of pomegranate juice a day helped in reducing blood pressure specially the systolic pressure and lowered oxidation of LDL cholesterol. The pomegranate may be having other benefits as well, but this needs to be substantiated by scientific evidence and research. It has been proven that it is safe to drink pomegranate juice and 1.5 ounce consumption per day and really no significant side effects.
FLAX SEED
Flax seed is a vegetarian alternative for omega-5-fatty acid. Research and studies have substantiated the health benefits derived from the consumption of flax seed. Flax is proven to have certain heart health benefits as well. Flaxseed is composed of a variety of beneficial ingredients namely lignan and fiber-an antioxidant phytoestrogen. Further research and study has proved that lignan displays positive results in fighting diseases like cancer where flax seed is said to possess anti-cancer properties. There is evidence suggesting that flax seed in helpful in the prevention of breast cancer in females.
WALNUTS
One of the best sources of plant protein is walnuts. It is rich in vitamin B, fiber, vitamin E and magnesium. Walnuts tend to have a high concentration of omega-3-fatty acids and plant sterols as compared to other nuts. The FDA further endorsed the heart health claims of walnuts.
Dont forget your diet is as vital as your exercise!!

Actually, I ate a nice helping of salmon on July 4th. Wish there was more fish that I liked, but I am a bit particular when it comes to fish.
